Dr Basto cares for general urology conditions in both men and women and has further expertise in reconstructive and functional urology. Her interests include the care of patients with lower urinary tract symptoms, urinary incontinence, urethral strictures, urinary tract infections, pelvic organ prolapse and erectile dysfunction, as well as neurological conditions that affect the bladder. Marni holds public and private hospital positions and is currently consulting patients at Mona Vale and St Leonards.
Dr Basto completed her postgraduate medical degree at the University of Melbourne. During her early years as a resident doctor, Marni undertook full-time research at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre to obtain her doctorate thesis on the health and economic impact of robotic surgery in the Australian public health system.
Having gained broad surgical training across three states (VIC/NSW/QLD), Marni concluded her Urology training with a fellowship year at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital with a specific focus on reconstruction and robotic surgery. During her training she was nominated by her colleagues for the prestigious John Corboy medal for demonstration of leadership and service to the trainees of the college.
Marni undertook a further subspecialty fellowship year in Sydney Australia with internationally renowned leaders in the field of reconstructive and functional urology. Dr Basto has pursued international training with world leaders at New York University (NYU) Hospital and the Kulkarni Institute for urological reconstruction in India, as well as further robotic reconstructive training at the RMK Aimes institute in Europe. She was awarded a travelling prosthetic fellowship in the United States by the Australia and New Zealand Urology board.
An active contributor to medical education, Dr Basto holds a Senior Clinical Lecturer position at the University of Sydney and is committed to academic research in her field. She regularly reviews for urology journals.
Marni and her husband love Sydney and enjoy a busy life juggling their children and all their extracurricular activities. She exercises regularly and loves to travel.

Research empowers surgeons to improve patient care by fostering evidence-based decision-making, advancing surgical techniques and enhancing treatment outcomes.
Dr Basto has a doctorate and has published over 20 peer reviewed papers. She is credited with abstracts and presentations at national and international conferences including Europe, the United Kingdom and the United States. Marni has received awards for her research from the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. Further, she has written a book chapter in the field of reconstructive and functional urology.
